ABOUT THE PENNYROYAL ARTS COUNCIL

Founded in 1977, the Pennyroyal Arts Council, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the cultural landscape of Hopkinsville and the surrounding region. Our mission is to encourage, develop, and promote the appreciation of the arts through education, support, service, and presentation.

We proudly manage the historic Alhambra Theatre on South Main Street in downtown Hopkinsville, which serves as the hub for our dynamic programming. Offerings include the popular Live at the Alhambra performance series, School Day Performances, Missoula Children’s Theatre, art exhibitions, and other community arts initiatives.

The organization is overseen by a Board of Directors, which convenes monthly on the second Thursday at the Alhambra Theatre—these meetings are open to the public. Our dedicated team includes an Executive Director, Business Manager, Marketing Director, Education Coordinator, Rentals and Hospitality Manager, Technical Director, Theatre Office Assistant, and Patron Services Manager.

Together, we are committed to making the arts accessible and meaningful for all members of our community.

ABOUT THE ALHAMBRA THEATRE

Managed by the Pennyroyal Arts Council, the Alhambra Theatre is a 650-seat historic venue located in downtown Hopkinsville. Originally opened on May 28, 1928, the theatre was inspired by the Alhambra Palace in Spain and features stunning Spanish-Moorish architecture, including intricate moldings, a painted stage canvas, and original 1928 details like chandeliers and mosaic tile floors.

Once hailed as “the most beautiful and practical theater in America,” the Alhambra hosted vaudeville acts, silent films, and notable performers such as Gene Autry and Billy Sunday. It transitioned from a cinema to a performing arts center in the 1980s, with the Pennyroyal Arts Council leading its restoration and programming ever since.

A major renovation in 2018 modernized the theatre with state-of-the-art lighting, accessibility improvements, and an expanded second floor—The Hall at the Alhambra—now home to events and the Arts Council’s offices.

Today, the Alhambra continues to be a vibrant cultural hub, offering live performances, school shows, art exhibits, and more—serving the community for nearly a century.

BEYOND THE STAGE - OUR IMPACT

At the Pennyroyal Arts Council, we believe the arts are a powerful force for education, connection, and community growth. Through our programming at the Alhambra Theatre and beyond, we work to ensure the arts are accessible and meaningful to all.

Live Performances That Inspire
Our events—including the Live at the Alhambra series, touring shows, and local productions—bring thousands of people together each year. These shared cultural experiences enrich lives and foster a lasting appreciation for the arts.

Investing in Education
We reach students across Christian County through School Day Performances and programs like Missoula Children’s Theatre. These opportunities build creativity, confidence, and a lifelong connection to the arts.

A Space for Everyone
The Alhambra is more than a theatre—it’s a gathering place. From free community events to partnerships with schools and nonprofits, we’re committed to making the arts welcoming and inclusive.

Preserving History, Creating Opportunity
Our ongoing restoration of the Alhambra Theatre preserves a treasured landmark while boosting downtown vitality. Renovations completed in 2018 modernized the space while honoring its historic beauty.

Creating Lasting Change
Our work is made possible by the support of donors, volunteers, and community partners. Together, we’re using the power of the arts to shape a stronger, more vibrant Hopkinsville.
